As some of you have read in my monthly report for DM, the Senior Staff have been discussing the idea of bringing the Band into line with the books and forming a 4th Regiment. An idea for the Masons has been proposed to us, and we like what we see. As always with the discussion of adding a 4th Regiment, our concerns are with numbers and what would happen should it fail.
Before we go charging ahead, the Senior Staff want to gather a list of names of Banders who are interested in joining the Masons and be at the heart of founding this new Regiment. It will involve time and commitment, and if you have any doubts about changing, then don't. We are only interested in those people who will put the time in to make this work. Therefore, please PM any of the Senior Staff (Corki, Tay or Brid) if you are interested.[/b] The amount of interest will influence the Senior Staff's decision of whether to carry through the proposal given to us. If you are interested, please PM us by Saturday 9th February 2008.
Should there be enough interest not to affect the other Regiments in a negative way, work will be undertaken to get the Masons up and running for March 1st. The Senior Staff agree that the addition of a 4th Regiment will not affect the Raw Recruit Scheme. We are also considering reducing the number of Redarms per Regiment as well to begin with.
Should the formation of the Masons go ahead, but later fail, we have decided that all those who changed can return to their original Regiment with no penalties.
At the moment, we are gathering information on interest. So please PM us if you are interested. If you have any questions, either post them here for others to read, or send them to the Senior Staff in private. We will more than happy to answer your questions and concerns.

bit confused at the bit about it not affecting the RR Scheme... how will it get new members if it doesn't have its own week in the program?

Horn - I believe he meant it will not effect the RR scheme negatively. There will be another week added for the 4th regiment with a 4th task.

where do we see this monthly report to DM? and what would this 4th regiment be about? I don't recall any masons in the books, to be honest.
However way you look at it, it will affect the current regiments and the RR program, which is not to say that is necessarily a bad thing but to make it out as though nothing will change for the regiments or RR program is simply not true.
If another week is added to the RR program, that means one extra week Recruits will have to go through before being able to choose a regiment. And 3 instead of 4 weeks they will be 'out of touch' with the other regiments.
Also, reducing the number of RA's will most definately affect the regiments. Again not per sé in a bad way, but it will affect them nonetheless.
So don't say it won't affect things, as it most certainly will.
Where did this idea come from anyway? I haven't seen anything about it on the Staff boards or anywhere else untill now. Who or what is behind this idea and how did it take form?
A bit more indept information wouldn't be out of place here.

I don't think "Masons" would be the right name, as a regiment like the one I think you are referencing would more likely be classed as Engineers... Building Siege engines and undermining walls, things like that.
I could be wrong, but I am going from historical references and I have heard of regiments of engineers, but not masons

I don't recall any masons in the books, to be honest. I am not saying too much until I get feedback on who is interested. And check page 566 (UK edition) for the reference to the Masons. Also, reducing the number of RA's will most definately affect the regiments. Again not per sé in a bad way, but it will affect them nonetheless. If a 4th Regiment is added, this is only to begin with. Once numbers are stable, I see no reason why Redarms can't increase. 12 Redarms is a bit too many to begin with. Where did this idea come from anyway? I haven't seen anything about it on the Staff boards or anywhere else untill now. Who or what is behind this idea and how did it take form? I've had this idea since I read Book 11. I remember asking the Staff before about it, but it got rejected.

Would any new RR's be allowed to join. I am about done with my RR program but would be intersted in helping out with it. Right now I have the time to donate to it.

I think what Myst was getting at is that if a forth week is added... the first regiment a recruit visited will already be in the back of their minds. The longer you make the program, the less likely the first regiment they visit will remain something they consider as much.

I read that report and it doesn't give any more information on the whole masons idea than what was posted here, so basically that didn't help.
From your first post it is clear that this is something that was 'proposed' to you, as you put it yourself, so 'it's something I been thinking about since I read book 11' doesn't really cover a 'proposal you got and you liking what you saw'. Obviously a more detailed outline of what this regiment would be about is on the table already, discussed over with whoever made that proposal and the SS and maybe a few lucky individuals that were priveledged in on the whole thing behind the scenes. Which seems to be the case if I interpret some of the reactions from a few both here and on the report correctly.
Now you ask us to choose based on nothing else but: 'want a 4th regiment?'
Sorry Corki, but if this thing has been discussed in private, without even an indication to the general Bander that it IS being discussed, let alone even a general outline of what to expect, how do you expect people to give an honest opinionon this? Might as well ask someone if they want a government without including what type of government they might expect.
So with nothing else to go on than 'want a 4th regiment?' my answer is no. You're asking people to blindly sign up for something that will be time consuming and demanding on their part without them even knowing what they're getting themselves into or what theme they will end up working around.
No decent choice can be made under those circumstances.
And given that the people that will be put in this new regiment will come from the 3 regiments already existing, I'd say there will most definately be a negative side to this that will be very real. Not only that but the ones that would be put in it would also be the more active ones, which again will hurt the existing ones. We're finally starting to pick up the pieces again in each regiment after over a year of fighting each in our own way to make our regiment a living, thriving one and now we'll end up having to offer up all that hard work to a new regiment that will eat up our most active members.
Maybe im seeing things too gloomy, but without any more information that's the room you create for our thought processes on this.

This idea certainly has promise, but I think right now is bad timing... the Archers have only recently gotten fully back on their feet and I would hate to see the rug pulled from under them.
edit: Also, from an administrative point of view, with the exception of an even number allowing one vs one or two vs two competitions, having an odd number of groups usually works better, especially when having competitions between the groups. Also with the Regimental competitions, introducing this mid-year would really screw that up...
Personally I'd like this to be put on the shelf, but only for now, and relooked at in October, preparing for the following January.

It's hard to call any regiment a TRUE regiment. We need more members for sure, because at this point each regiment has size of a platoon with 8 to 12 active members. New regiment is a good idea, but we need to grow our numbers first.

Personally I'd like this to be put on the shelf, but only for now, and relooked at in October, preparing for the following January. I would disagree. The earlier it was started the more likelyhood it would have the feel of a regiment in it's own right as opposed to just a gathering of banders from the three existing regiments. How long did it take each regiment to become the regiment they are today? Longer than 3 months I'll bet. So if this was to actually go ahead, now would be the ideal time to lay the foundations for the new reg. (See what I did there? With the foundations? Good huh?)
